PENSTEMON WHIPPLEANUS:  A beautiful species that reaches heights of 90 cm or more – this plant bloomed the first season from seed and has done remarkably well in our plots.  Plants are covered with deep purple flowers from early July well into August.  Full sun and fertile well-drained soils with even moisture seem to work best.  Seeds can be sown direct in late fall or early spring – best success will be achieved by starting indoors after a 3-4 week moist stratification period.  Cover the seeds with .5 cm of soil and keep evenly moist until germination occurs.  60 seeds.    P614
