Our Plant World
Bedrock Seed Bank will have a large selection of plants available for sale in 2010, all suited for the Edmonton area. Minimal water, low maintenance, winter hardy plants—the major components of xeriscaping—this is our focus. One of our fundamental principles is to provide winter hardy species to our customers, through seed or by living plants.
None of our plants have been greenhouse grown. In order to enhance 'northern vigour' the mature plants have been field grown outside Edmonton, over-wintered, then transplanted into containers. Plant strength and root development is our goal. We use very little if any water once the plants are in the ground—relying on nature to provide all they need. Transplanting from plug form into the soil is done in the rain or just before. If we can do it with little or no water - so can you.
Most of our plant choices require full to almost full sun. We grow very few plants that tolerate and thrive in semi-shade conditions. Our species selection includes plants that are native to Alberta and from similar climates around the world—they have in common deep and extensive root systems—ideal candidates for xeriscaping. 1st year plants are started in April in an unheated greenhouse and allowed to develop slowly.
